In choosing a decorative birdhouse it is important that the following factors are considered:
ventilation
NO perch by the entrance because it encourages predators
slanted roofs so rain, and dirt do not collect on top, and a wall removable for cleaning.
Most of our fancy birdhouses are meant to be mounted. Mount your birdhouse on pedestal, birdhouse pole, 4X4 wood post or side of tree. When using a pole a squirrel baffle is also needed so predators can not climb pole.
Cavity-dwellers like the Chickadee, Plain Titmouse, House Wren, and Red Breasted Nuthatch need :
houses with entrance holes around 1 inch in diameter and small natural wood nesting boxes.
Chickadees and nuthatches also like an entry at the top with an opportunity to nest below.
Mount the decorative birdhouse between 5 and 10 feet in height to attract these birds.
Purple martin houses should:
be white and have an entry hole of 2.5 inch in diameter.
The houses should be 12 or 15 feet high and in an open field.
Cardinals, Orioles, Goldfinches and Robins do not nest in man made wood birdhouses but you can attract these birds by providing nesting materials, water and feeders
